The routing number on a US cheque is the nine-digit code at the bottom left, next to your account number and cheque number. It tells the bank where the money comes from. Here is how to read it fast.
Where to Find It
At the bottom of a cheque, the format is: routing number (9 digits), account number, cheque number. The routing digits are also printed after '!' twice-facing symbols.
What the Digits Mean
The first two digits identify the Federal Reserve district; the next set identifies the bank; the last digit is a check digit that validates the code.
Routing Number vs Account Number
The routing number finds the bank; the account number finds the specific account. Mixing them up causes failed or misrouted transactions.
